The watch's sensors and GPS recording frequency can also be modified to extend battery life. The Garmin Instinct has a battery life of 24 days (54 days with solar) when used as a smartwatch (no GPS use) and 30 hours (38 hours with solar) hours in full GPS mode. Unfortunately, we found that the Garmin Instinct does not have access to Garmin's app store and those same features, at least for now. These include third-party watch faces, data fields, widgets, and device apps. The Fenix 6 series (our upgrade winner) has access to more customizable features through Garmin Connect IQ. I never had issues with glare, even in full sun on the Arizona Trail or in Southern California on the PCT. Although it is specifically designed for hiking and other outdoor adventure activities, it also has a comprehensive set of fitness tracking metrics such as heart rate monitoring, step counts, floor climbing counts, and sleep and stress tracking. The Instinct Solar provides altimeter, barometer, and compass (ABC) functions along with GPS functionality in a watch with excellent battery life.
